This breed is of Mediterranean ancestry whose oldest ancestor is the Barbet, or water spaniel, from which the name Barbichon came. Later that name was shortened to Bichon. There are also such breeds as Caniche, or Poodle, and the Maltese that are descended from the Barbet.

These dogs found early success in Spain and it is generally felt that the Spanish seamen introduced the breed to the Canary Island of Teneriffe.
